Siargao

Siargao is the surfing capital of the Philippines and a laid-back island paradise that has evolved far beyond just waves. Cloud 9's world-famous barrel break draws professional surfers globally, but Siargao's magic extends to coconut tree-lined beach roads by motorbike, peaceful lagoons at Sugba, snorkeling at Daku Island, and the famous tidal pools at Magpupungko. The island's unhurried vibe is genuinely restorative.

With kids

Island hopping is great for kids — shallow, calm waters at Daku and Guyam. Magpupungko Rock Pools (best at low tide) are a natural playground. Younger children can take beginner surf lessons in calm waters. Sugba Lagoon is safe and beautiful.

With seniors

Siargao is best for mobile seniors. Terrain includes unpaved roads and boat boarding. The island has limited medical facilities — ensure travel insurance. Sugba Lagoon and island hopping are manageable from boats. For very senior travelers, stick to comfortable resort stays in General Luna.

Visa

Domestic. Philippine ID required. Environmental fees apply for Sugba Lagoon and Sohoton Cove.

When to go

Best: Mar–Sep (dry season). Best surf at Cloud 9 is Sep–Nov. Avoid: Nov–Feb (typhoon risk, rough seas, island hopping often cancelled).
