Sagada & Banaue

The Cordillera highlands offer a Philippines completely unlike the beach-and-island cliché — cool mountain air, ancient Igorot culture, and two of the country's most awe-inspiring sights. Banaue's 2,000-year-old rice terraces (UNESCO) are called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World.' Sagada's limestone caves, hanging coffins, and Kiltepan sunrise complete a highland circuit unlike any in Southeast Asia.

With kids

Banaue viewpoint is accessible to all ages and the terraces' scale impresses children. Sagada cave spelunking (beginner portion of Sumaguing) suits adventurous kids 10+. Mountain air is cool (15–22°C) — pack layers. Food in Sagada is simple but good.

With seniors

Banaue main viewpoint is accessible by vehicle — highly recommended for seniors. Batad amphitheater requires a steep, rocky trail — not suitable for mobility-limited seniors. Sagada's cool temperature (15°C at night) requires warm clothing. Road to Sagada is winding — motion sickness medication recommended.

Visa

Domestic. Philippine ID required. Sagada SEGA guide required for caves — hire at the tourism office. Registration fee applies.

When to go

Best: Feb–Apr (dry, clear skies for Kiltepan sunrise). Nov–Jan is cold but atmospheric with morning mist. Avoid: Jun–Sep (heavy rains, landslide risk). Holy Week is extremely crowded.
