Palawan — El Nido & Puerto Princesa

Palawan is consistently rated the world's best island — an untouched paradise of emerald lagoons, cathedral caves, towering limestone karst islands, and some of Asia's most pristine coral reefs. El Nido's Big and Small Lagoons are bucket-list experiences. The Puerto Princesa Underground River (UNESCO) is one of the world's longest navigable cave rivers. Coron's sunken WWII Japanese fleet is Asia's premier wreck diving destination.

With kids

El Nido's island hopping has calm lagoon waters and shallow snorkeling areas perfect for young children. The Underground River boat tour is magical. Honda Bay near Puerto Princesa is calmer and safer for young swimmers. Pack reef-safe sunscreen.

With seniors

El Nido island hopping involves getting in/out of small boats — some agility needed. Underground River is boat-based and suitable for all mobility levels. Coron is excellent for seniors who enjoy scenic beauty from boat decks. El Nido town itself is hilly and uneven — wear good shoes.

Visa

Domestic. Philippine ID or passport required. Environmental fee (₱200) at El Nido. Palawan Protected Area fee for Underground River. Book island hopping tours in advance.

When to go

Best: Nov–May (dry, calm seas, excellent visibility). Avoid: Jun–Oct (monsoon season, rough seas cancel island hopping).
