The Maldives is the world's ultimate overwater bungalow destination — crystalline turquoise lagoons, house reefs teeming with marine life, and the sensation of sleeping above the Indian Ocean. For budget-conscious Filipinos, local island guesthouses on Maafushi and Mahibadhoo offer a fraction of the price of luxury resorts while still enjoying world-class snorkeling.

Best for
With kids
Snorkeling off the beach and seeing rays and sharks in shallow water is thrilling for kids. Most resorts have kids clubs and shallow lagoons safe for swimming. Baby reef sharks in shallow water are docile and exciting. The long connecting flight can be challenging for very young children.
With seniors
One of the most relaxing destinations possible — flat atolls, calm lagoons, excellent resort service. Speedboat transfers can be rough in bad weather. Most overwater villas require climbing stairs to water level — choose beach villas for easier access.
Visa
Visa-Free for all passport holders. 30-day tourist visa issued free on arrival. Simply arrive with hotel/resort booking and return ticket.
When to go
Best: Nov–Apr (dry, calm, crystal-clear water). Avoid: May–Oct (southwest monsoon, choppy seas). Whale sharks at South Ari Atoll year-round but best Dec–Apr.
Getting there from MNL
Fly MNL→Malé (MLE) via Singapore (SQ), Kuala Lumpur (AK), or Sri Lanka. Multiple connections available. Flight time ~8–10 hrs with connection. Upon arrival in Malé, reach resort by speedboat (30–90 min) or seaplane (15–45 min, expensive but spectacular). Budget travelers take a ferry to Maafushi local island.
