Batanes Islands

Batanes is the Philippines' most remote and dramatically beautiful archipelago — windswept limestone cliffs, rolling green hills that look like Ireland, Ivatan stone houses that have stood for centuries, and a pace of life so slow it feels like time travel. The northernmost province of the Philippines sits closer to Taiwan than to Manila. Its unique culture, architecture, and landscapes make it one-of-a-kind in all of Southeast Asia.

With kids

Batanes is best for kids 8+ who enjoy nature and culture over theme parks. Rolling hills make excellent open play areas. The Ivatan people are famously warm and welcoming. Pack layers — the wind is intense and temperatures drop to 15°C at night.

With seniors

Terrain is hilly and some paths are unpaved — best for mobile seniors. Most tour itineraries use vehicles or motorcycles. Accommodation is simple but clean. Healthcare facilities are very basic — Batanes is not recommended for seniors with serious medical conditions.

Visa

Domestic. Philippine ID required. Register at tourism office on arrival in Basco. Environmental and tourism fees apply for Sabtang Island.
